A Nigerian military court sentenced 12 soldiers to death for staging a mutiny in the northeastern state of Borno where security forces are battling Islamist militants, an army spokesman said.
The 12 were among 18 soldiers convicted of charges including mutiny, attempted murder of their commanding officer and insubordination at an army base in Maiduguri in May, Aliyu Yusuf, an army spokesman, said today by phone from Abuja, the capital. Five others were freed, while one was jailed for 28 days.
Nigeria’s military is battling to contain a five-year campaign by Boko Haram to impose Islamic law on Africa’s top oil producer.
The convicted soldiers can appeal the ruling, Yusuf said !!
