Officials from Chinese state media were left red-faced after the network wrongly announced Istanbul had won the race to host the 2020 Olympic Games instead of the actual victors Tokyo.
Xinhua News Agency said the Japanese capital failed in its bid to hold the sporting event, while the state-run television service ran with the headline ‘Tokyo eliminated’.
The confusion may have sprung from the fact the Turkish city had won in the first round of voting against Madrid, but went on to fail against Tokyo.
The gaffe led to the state institute being criticised on the Chinese version of Twitter, Sina Weibo.
Yan Tao said ‘they made fools of themselves’ and other users added they thought they had purposely tried to mislead their viewers due to China’s rivalry with Japan.
The error was the latest in a long line of mistakes by the country’s state media.
