Jennifer Hudson hosted a school supplies giveaway last week in honor of her slain nephew Julian. Hudson’s sister, Julia King, was also on hand for the third annual Hatch Day, which is celebrated on Julian’s birthday by donating school supplies to low-income children in Chicago.

“They can bring their list, pick and choose what they may need and go from there,” Hudson said.

The event took place at a Salvation Army community center in the city’s South Side neighborhood and had enough backpacks, notebooks, pens, pencils and other supplies for 5,000 children.

Julian, who would have celebrated his 12th birthday this year, was killed by King’s boyfriend in 2008 along with the sisters’ mother and brother. Last year, William Balfour was sentenced to life in prison for the murders. Julian was just seven years old at the time.

“He was so into education, which is part of why we chose to give back in this way,” Hudson said.
